You don't legally need a course to run Meta ads for clients, but you do need to know what you're doing, because you're spending someone else's money. Most freelance social media managers who offer ads take a service-focused course like Ads Manager Academy so they can price it, run it and report on it with confidence, rather than learning on a client's live budget.

Now the longer answer, because “do I need a course” really comes down to three questions.

Can you run Meta ads without a course?

Technically, yes. Nobody checks for a certificate before they let you into Ads Manager. You could open an account this afternoon, press some buttons, and call yourself an ads manager by teatime.

But there's a gap between being allowed to run ads and being ready and responsible to spend someone else's ad budget. And that gap is where client relationships go to die.

Here's the thing about running ads for someone else. Three things are true at the same time: it's their money, it's your reputation, and there is no undo button on a budget you've already spent. That's a lot of pressure to be figuring out live, on a real client, while they refresh the results every twenty minutes and ask why nothing's happened yet.

What a good course actually saves you

The value of a course isn't the button-clicking. You can learn where the buttons are from a free YouTube video (more on that in a minute). The value is everything that happens around the buttons.

A good, service-focused course teaches you the bits that don't show up in a free online tutorial:

How to audit a client's ad account before you touch it, so you know what you're walking into.

How to structure a campaign so it has a chance of working, rather than copying an out-of-date setup from a 2022 blog post.

How to spot when something's going wrong early, instead of finding out when the client emails in a panic.

And the one everyone forgets, how to explain the results to a client who doesn't speak marketing and thinks “reach” and “results” are the same word.

That last one is the difference between a client who renews and a client who cancels as early as they can. You can be great at the ads and still lose the client because you couldn't show them what they got for their money.

Free Meta ads courses versus paid Meta ads courses: where each one fits

You don't have to choose one or the other. The sensible path is both.

Start with Meta Blueprint. It's free, and it teaches you the platform layout and vocabulary. It's a genuinely good foundation, and it costs you nothing but time.

Then, when you want to offer ads as a paid service, add a course that teaches the service and strategy, not just the software. That's the gap Ads Manager Academy was built for. It takes social media managers from “I've never touched Ads Manager” to running campaigns for clients with confidence, and it includes the client-side stuff (pricing, onboarding, reporting) that Blueprint doesn't go near. Over 500 social media managers have been through Ads Manager Academy since 2019.

So, do you need a Meta ads course at all?

If you're running ads on your own business to test the water, no, go and play in Blueprint first.

If you're about to charge a client £750 or more a month to manage their ads, then yes, invest in learning it properly first.
