If your client comes to you and says “I want to make more sales”, it’s not okay for you as a freelance social media manager to allow your client to set you a target based around that. Why? What if their website goes down? What if they’re out of stock that week? The same goes for things like “I want to go viral” and “I want more followers”. There’s just so much outside of your control that has no bearing on whether you did a good job or not. So, if you’ve got a client who wants to set some key performance indicators (KPIs) with you – what can you do?
This is where you need to step up as a strategist. Instead of letting the client set random performance related goals with you, you need to tell them what you’re going to be focusing on and why. KPIs do certainly have their place if you’re a freelancer (think internal goals), but they definitely don’t have a place with your clients, and don’t let them tell you otherwise!
In today’s episode, we’re sharing all about how you’d handle this kind of situation, and get you and your clients on the same page of their social media strategy and how it fits into the wider picture of their business.
In this episode, we’re chatting about:
- Why setting performance-based goals doesn’t work when you’re freelance
- How you can still have a focus with your clients without it being based on your time or performance
- Using testing and data to influence your future strategies
- Why you could still use KPIs in your own business
- How to move a client away from a KPI mindset
